The call to introduce a new living wage system by the Fiji Trades Union Congress (FTUC), must be carefully balanced against existing wage systems and economic realities”, said Mr Edward Bernard the CEO of the Fiji Commerce & Employers Federation (FCEF).

Fiji currently has the minimum wage, sectoral wage, collective bargaining and performance management systems to set wages.

Collective bargaining addresses cost of living adjustments and inflation.

Mr Bernard said that a recent workshop organised by the International Labour Organization (ILO) identified many gaps in the process of minimum wage setting in Fiji. These included the absence of a wage setting criteria and genuine and transparent consultations. In fact, the identification of these gaps could potentially mean that Fiji is in breach of ILO Convention 131 on Minimum Wage Fixing.

The ILO workshop revealed that Fiji’s median wage was US$477 per month, higher than 13 countries in the Asia region. In addition, Fiji’s gender pay gap was also relatively better than many countries in Asia and some in South America.

FCEF is calling on Government to prioritise fixing the current gaps in Fiji’s current wage setting system. “We need to establish an evidenced based wage setting criteria, and a transparent consultation system. Until the current wage setting system is fixed, there should not be any increase in minimum wage or introduction of living wage in Fiji”, said Mr Bernard.

The 2026/2027 National Budget must focus on creating conditions that encourage investment, support business growth, create employment, and increase productivity.
